The Oblates of the Virgin Mary [O .M.V.] are a male religious congregation. The congregation, a member of the Ignatian family, was founded by diocesan right in 1816 by the venerable Pio Bruno Lanteri under the name ofOblates of Mary Most Holy<\/u><\/strong> before becoming the Oblates of the Virgin Mary <\/u><\/strong>(in Latin: “Oblatorum Beat\u00e6 Mari\u00e6 Virginis”) when, in 1826, Father Lanteri obtained recognition from the Holy See by becoming a congregation of “Pontifical Right”. <\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

It is interesting to note that the ecclesiastical group founded by Father Bruno Lanteri in Turin for the training of clergy produced at least thirty saints, blessed or venerable, including Joseph Cafasso, Giovanni Cagliero, Jean Bosco, Dominique Savio, Joseph Allamano and Giuseppe Benedetto Cottolengo.<\/p>\n

In 1825 and 1826, Lanteri met four times with Father Eug\u00e8ne de Mazenod, founder of the Society of Missionaries of Provence, or Oblates of St. Charles, better known today as the “Oblates of Mary Immaculate”. During de Mazenod’s trip to Rome to seek the Holy See’s approval of his rule, he stopped off in Turin from November 7 to 14, 1825, where he met several members of the congregation of the Oblates of Mary Most Holy (first name of the O.M.V.) founded by Bruno Lanteri. This congregation had just disintegrated as a result of the obstacles placed in its way by the civil and religious authorities. <\/p>\n

Father de Mazenod met Bruno Lanteri on November 15, 1825 for a dozen hours to discuss the possible merger of their two congregations. Although founded in France, Father de Mazenod’s institute already included several Italian priests, including Father Charles Dominique Albini (1790-1839), former rector of the Nice seminary. As soon as he entered the novitiate in 1824, Father de Mazenod decided not only to change the name of his congregation, but also to add to the rule the importance of training clerics as soon as they entered the major seminaries. <\/p>\n

On February 17, 1826, Father Lanteri wrote to de Mazenod that the union of their two congregations was not possible, as the Oblate confreres were opposed to it, and were themselves seeking pontifical approval on their own. Eug\u00e8ne de Mazenod obtained papal recognition of his rule on March 21, 1826, while Father Lanteri arrived in Rome in April 1826 to seek papal approval of the Oblates of the Virgin Mary. The two founders met again on April 20, 22 and 24, 1826. <\/p>\n

Subsequently, in 1833, Pope Gregory XVI gave the Oblates of the Virgin Mary pastoral responsibility for the Shrine of the Consolata in Turin and, in 1837 and 1842, the task of evangelizing the missionary territory of the Apostolic Vicariate of Ava and Pegu in Burma.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t
