In Scripture, the hand is not just a part of the body: it often expresses <strong>action, power, blessing, relationship and service<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n<p>I propose a reading in a few broad dimensions.<\/p>\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n<p><strong>1) The hand as a symbol of power and action<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p>In the Bible, the hand represents first and foremost the <strong>ability to act<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n<p>When we speak of the &#8220;hand of God&#8221;, we often mean <strong>his concrete intervention in history<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>God protects with his hand<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>God delivers with his hand<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>God leads his people<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p>For example, the expression <em>&#8220;the mighty hand of the Lord&#8221; <\/em>evokes his salvific power, particularly when he came out of Egypt.<\/p>\n\n<p>The hand therefore means: <strong>that which realizes, that which accomplishes, that which transforms<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n<p><strong>2) The hand as a sign of blessing<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p>One of the most biblical gestures is the <strong>laying on of hands<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n<p>Jacob blessed Ephraim and Manasseh by laying his hands on them (Gen 48).<br\/>Jesus did the same with the children: <em><strong>&#8220;He laid his hands on them and blessed them.&#8221;<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n<p>This gesture signifies <strong>the transmission of grace, protection and promise<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n<p>In the Christian tradition, this continues in :<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>blessings<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>ordinations<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>confirmations<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>anointing of the sick<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n<p><strong>3) The hand as a sign of healing and mercy<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p>In the Gospels, Jesus <strong>touches with his hands<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n<p>He lifts, heals, takes the hand:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Pierre&#8217;s mother-in-law<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>the blind<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>the sick<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>the children<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p>This touch is never neutral: it expresses <strong>God&#8217;s compassion incarnate<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n<p>The hand of Christ is a hand that :<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>relief<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>restores<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>restores dignity<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n<p><strong>4) The hand as service &#8211; a strong spiritual sense<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p>We all know that the gesture of foot washing is a powerful, unique and revealing gesture.<\/p>\n\n<p>Here, the hands of Jesus become <strong>the hands of servants<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n<p>They don&#8217;t dominate, they kneel.<\/p>\n\n<p>The biblical meaning is magnificent: the true power of God is revealed in <strong>hands that serve<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n<p>That&#8217;s the whole paradox of the Gospel.<\/p>\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n<p><strong>5) Symbolic meaning for spiritual life<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p>On an inner level, the hands also represent :<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>what we do<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>what we give<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>what we remember<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>what we hand over to God<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p>Open hands symbolize surrender and offering.<br\/>Raised hands symbolize prayer and supplication.<\/p>\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n<p>Let me put it in a nutshell: <strong>in the Bible, hands are the symbol of love in action.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p>On Holy Thursday, we see that Jesus&#8217; hands wash, bless, heal and finally allow themselves to be nailed to the cross out of love.<\/p>\n\n<p>It&#8217;s a very strong spiritual line.<\/p>\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"236\" height=\"511\" src=\"https:\/\/www.chapelle-sainte-rita.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/3e478325db8e8c02363070685b8b3c2f-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-14158\" style=\"aspect-ratio:0.461837196501743;width:178px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.chapelle-sainte-rita.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/3e478325db8e8c02363070685b8b3c2f-1.jpg 236w, https:\/\/www.chapelle-sainte-rita.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/3e478325db8e8c02363070685b8b3c2f-1-139x300.jpg 139w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 236px) 100vw, 236px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n<p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The biblical meaning of hands is very rich.
